Misery on the menu, pt. 1

I was forever changed by understanding what the phrase “misery on the menu” means. This phrase is a chapter title in The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World, by John Robbins, first published in 2001 and reissued in 2010.

John Robbins is the son of Irv Robbins, one of the founders of Baskin-Robbins. John Robbins walked away from his inheritance as the heir to his father’s ice cream empire and has devoted his life to raising awareness about the wide-ranging effects of eating animal products. His best-selling books continue to raise public awareness about the links among nutrition, the environment, and the treatment of animals. He writes about how a meat eater’s diet is ruining our health and the environment, and causing tremendous suffering to the animals raised to be food.
